20-Inch vs. 36-Inch Wedding Sparklers: Which Should You Choose?

Both our 20" and 36" Wedding Sparklers create the same low-smoke, gold sparkling effect. The biggest difference is simple: how long they burn.

Our Recommendation for Most Weddings: 20" Sparklers

Our 20" Wedding Sparklers are our go-to recommendation for most sparkler exits. They give you a full 2 minutes of burn time, which is plenty for a well-organized group to get great photos and enjoy the moment.

They also cost less than 36" sparklers while giving you the same sparkling performance. You're not sacrificing the quality or appearance of the effect by choosing 20", only some additional burn time.

A good goal is to have everyone lit within the first minute. That still leaves about another minute for the couple to walk through the tunnel, stop for a photo, and enjoy the exit.

 

When Should You Choose 36" Wedding Sparklers?

Choose our 36" Wedding Sparklers when extra time will make the exit easier to organize.

Their 3-minute burn gives coordinators, photographers, and guests more breathing room while everyone gets lit and into position. We often hear that wedding planners and photographers prefer the extra time for this reason.

That longer burn can also provide more opportunities for photos. Some couples stop during the exit for a kiss or even make another pass through the tunnel while the sparklers are still burning.

The effect itself is the same as our 20" sparklers. With 36", what you're paying for is more time and more flexibility.

 

How Many Wedding Sparklers Do I Need?

Plan on one sparkler for each guest who will actually participate in your wedding exit.

That usually isn't the same as your total number of invited guests. Some guests won't be able to attend, some may leave before the exit, and others may simply choose not to participate.

If you need a starting point, about 80% of your invited guest count is a reasonable rule of thumb, but every wedding is different. It's perfectly fine to buy extras if you want them, just don't stress about having exactly one sparkler for every person on the original guest list.

Most importantly, don't plan on 2 sparklers per person at the same time. We sometimes see this recommended as a way to create a brighter exit, but sparkler safety instructions call for holding and lighting only one sparkler at a time.

Buy enough packs to comfortably cover your expected participants, and let each person enjoy one sparkler during the exit.

 

Why We Recommend Gold, Wire-Core Sparklers for Weddings

You'll sometimes see wedding sparklers described as "smokeless." In reality, all sparklers produce some smoke. When we say our wedding sparklers are "low smoke" or "nearly smokeless," we're describing their performance relative to other types of sparklers.

That distinction matters at a wedding because dozens of sparklers may be burning close together at the same time.

We recommend gold, wire-core sparklers because they keep smoke to a minimum:

• Colored sparklers produce more smoke: The additional compounds used to create color result in a more torch-like flame and more smoke.
• Bamboo-core sparklers add burning wood: The bamboo itself burns along with the sparkler composition, creating considerably more smoke.
• Wire-core gold sparklers minimize those extra sources of smoke: That's better for your guests and especially important for clear wedding photos and video.

A little smoke is normal. The goal is to avoid creating more of it than necessary.

 

What Actually Makes a Good Wedding Sparkler?

"Wedding sparkler" is really shorthand for a sparkler that's well suited to the needs of a wedding. You shouldn't pay a huge premium just because the word "wedding" appears on the package, but you should make sure the product you're buying can actually do the job.

At Superior Celebrations, our wedding sparklers are machine-made to our specifications, helping maintain consistent sparkler-composition thickness along the length of the wire.

You may see other sparklers marketed as "double dipped." That terminology comes from an older manufacturing process in which wires were dipped into sparkler slurry to build up the composition. It isn't a meaningful measure for our machine-made sparklers.

Other details matter, too:

• Actual burn time: Our 20" sparklers burn for a full 2 minutes, while our 36" sparklers burn for at least 3 minutes.
• Actual size: A sparkler marketed as 20" should really be 20" long.
• Wire construction: A sturdy wire helps prevent excessive bending during handling, although some bending while a sparkler burns is normal as the wire becomes hot.
• Low-smoke performance: Gold, wire-core construction is better suited to groups and photography than smoky alternatives.
• Presentation: Attractive packaging helps the sparklers feel at home at a formal event.

We're a fireworks company at our core. We work directly with factory partners to manufacture sparklers to our specifications, import them ourselves, and distribute sparklers at both retail and wholesale. That means we're able to pay attention to the details that make a real difference when you're using dozens of sparklers together for an important event.

 

What About 10-Inch, Heart, and Star Sparklers?

Not every gold sparkler is a good choice for a full wedding exit.

We don't recommend 10" Gold Sparklers for wedding send-offs. They are made differently from our 20" and 36" Wedding Sparklers and simply don't burn long enough to give a large group the time needed for a coordinated exit.

Our Heart Sparklers and Star Sparklers are great for unique wedding photos, bridal-party moments, or smaller exits. For a traditional sparkler tunnel with a larger group of guests, stick with the 20" or 36" Wedding Sparklers.

 

How to Organize a Wedding Sparkler Exit

A smooth sparkler exit is mostly about organization. Whenever possible, let one of the professionals already managing your event, such as your wedding coordinator, DJ, or photographer, take charge.

We recommend this sequence:

1. Gather your guests.
2. Hand out the sparklers.
3. Form two lines along the exit.
4. Distribute wind-resistant, torch-style lighters throughout the group.
5. Make sure the photographer is in position.
6. Have one designated person give the signal to begin lighting.

That last step is important: everyone should know who is giving the lighting signal before the lighters are handed out.

 

The Fastest Way to Light Wedding Sparklers

Don't try to light every sparkler individually with a lighter, and don't try to use matches.

Instead, distribute plenty of wind-resistant, torch-style lighters throughout the line. Use each lighter to ignite one sparkler, then use that burning sparkler to light the other sparklers nearby.

Working in small groups of roughly 8–10 people can get a large exit lit surprisingly quickly.

With our 20" sparklers, aim to get the group lit and in place within the first minute. You'll still have at least another full minute for the couple to make their way through the tunnel.

 

A Few Final Tips for a Safe, Beautiful Exit

• Check with your venue first: Not every venue permits sparklers, and some restrict the sizes you can use or prefer to provide the sparklers themselves. We supply sparklers to many venues and are happy to work directly with yours if needed!
• Keep the exit outdoors: Wedding sparkler exits are an outdoor activity. If rain or snow changes your plans, don't move the sparkler exit indoors.
• Give the couple plenty of room: Guests should stand comfortably along the sides and hold their sparklers away from their bodies, angled toward the walkway while leaving safe clearance for the couple.
• Let your photographer plan the shot: Photographers commonly shoot from the end of the tunnel as the couple walks toward them. Couples often pause for a kiss, and videographers may move through the tunnel ahead of the couple.
• Let sparklers burn out naturally: Have buckets of water or sand available for used wires, and don't put hot sparkler wires into a trash can until they've cooled.
• Order early: Sparklers keep for years when stored in their packaging in a cool, dry place, so there's no downside to checking them off your wedding to-do list well ahead of time!
